Stage 1 of the Tour de l’Abitibi Glencore presented by Desjardins
Val-d’Or, July 16, 2024 — Today marked the first stage of the week. The riders covered 115.6 km between Rouyn-Noranda and Val-d’Or, passing through Malartic.
In the overall ranking, it is the French rider, Ellande Larronde, who was awarded the prestigious brown jersey and the orange jersey, given respectively to the best in the general classification and the best in the points classification. Ben Morin from the PNW Racing Foundation team claimed the blue jersey, awarded to the best young rider. Finally, the Japanese rider Genji Iwamura won the polka dots jersey, awarded to the best climber.
For this stage, the king of the mountain prizes were won by Genji Iwamura from Japan and Ben Morin from the PNW Racing Foundation.
Regarding the bonus sprints, the first sprint was won by Oliver Scott from the American team NorthStar Development Cycling, and the second bonus sprint was won by Carl Truffer from the Canadian team.
In the Rouyn-Noranda Mayor’s sprints, it was the Canadian, Mikael Guilbault, and the Alliance Club Cycliste rider, William Bourbonnais, who were the fastest to the goal.
There was an electrifying atmosphere during this first stage. The peloton was quite reactive and vigilant of the numerous breakaways. During the final circuit, we witnessed three fast laps with an average stage speed of 46.9 km/h. It was the French rider, Ellande Larronde, who crossed the Agnico Eagle finish line first, nearly 20 seconds ahead of the other leaders. As a result, France takes the lead in the overall team classification.
The riders are now preparing for the second stage, which will start at 5:00 PM from the Parc de la Cathédrale in Amos, covering a distance of 102 kilometers. The arrival is scheduled for 7:12 PM in front of the Val-d’Or City Hall.
